![]() ![]() You can look to Jesus who came from no hope, no opportunity and no way out. ![]() He can turn your life around and set you on your feet, if you will just look to Jesus from Nazareth. Since Jesus came from this no-name place, He can meet anyone in any place at any time, even when life seems worthless. Whatever the case, where you start has nothing to do with where you are going. After all, Jesus started out in an obscure town named Nazareth. Maybe you never experienced a loving relationship at home. Or maybe you lived in the suburbs, but were abused, neglected or pacified with “stuff”. ![]() Maybe you had to raise yourself because your mom worked three jobs. Maybe you didn’t come from a nice neighborhood or a school system whose funding indicated that they took your future seriously. Maybe your parents fought or divorced early on. Perhaps you didn’t have a good beginning upon which to build. ![]()

![]() 'The most exacting and lucid close-reader of poetry, his criticalvirtuosity has allowed him to escape the narrow historical specialisms of otherprofessors. Lyric, laughter, song, satire, story: this is an anthology to move and delight all who find themselves loving English verse. For the first time, wonderful poems that are also translations are included, likewise nursery rhymes, clerihews, and the great dramatic verse of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Ampler in range - up to Hughes and Heaney - it combines celebrated poems with a wealth of newly-chosen works, giving us 'Sumer is icumen in' and Anna Seward's 'OldCat's Dying Soliloquy', Keats's 'To Autumn' and Christina Rossetti's 'Goblin Market', Hugh MacDiarmid's 'O Wha's the Bride?', Stevie Smith's 'Not Waving but Drowning', Larkin's 'Mr Bleaney', andhundreds more. ![]() With its fresh and glittering choice of the jewels of English poetry, Christopher Ricks's Oxford Book of English Verse - third in succession, after Arthur Quiller-Couch's original volume (1900) and Helen Gardner's new selection (1972) - is a treasury from more than seven centuries of the poet's art. ![]() ![]() ![]() Rounding out the edition are Schapiro’s stories from the field, an original introduction by civil rights legend and U.S. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Fred Shuttlesworth, and Jerome Smith―and such landmark events as the March on Washington and the Selma March. The encounter thrust Schapiro into the thick of the movement, allowing for vital, often iconic, images both of civil rights leaders―including Dr. Now, James Baldwin’s rich, raw, and ever relevant prose is reprinted with more than 100 photographs from Steve Schapiro, who traveled the American South with Baldwin for Life magazine. ![]() First published in 1963, James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time stabbed at the heart of America’s so-called “Negro problem.” As remarkable for its masterful prose as for its frank and personal account of the black experience in the United States, it is considered one of the most passionate and influential explorations of 1960s race relations, weaving thematic threads of love, faith, and family into a candid assault on the hypocrisy of the “land of the free.” ![]() ![]() ![]() Golden for defamation as she claimed that many of the events in his story were taken from her own life and then twisted into a prostitution narrative. As such, the book sold poorly in Japan and was mostly ignored until Mineko Iwasaki sued Mr. Golden bent the truth and added in parts about geisha selling sex like prostitutes. However, in order to sell more copies and to make it more sensational Mr. Golden had spoken with her on the assurance that his book would be an accurate representation of the geisha profession, and upon its release in 1997, it became an international bestseller. Upon trying to do the research he stumbled upon a person who could introduce him to the most famous geisha of the 20th century: Mineko Iwasaki. ![]() ![]() In the early 1990s, Arthur Golden set out to write a novel about a topic that he had no previous background knowledge or study in. Also, Mineko Iwasaki was uncomfortable with the way Arthur Golden (the author) portrayed geisha as if they are Japanese courtesans. Surprisingly, not the plot, but some characters in the book resembled some of the real characters in Mineko Iwasaki’s life that she shared with the author in a private conversation. ![]() However, a real geisha, named Mineko Iwasaki, sued the author of the book because of defamation. ![]() ![]() ![]() In 1959 she won the József Attila Prize, after which she went on to write many more novels, among them Katalin utca (Katalin Street, 1969), Ókút (The Ancient Well, 1970), Régimódi történet (An Old-Fashioned Tale, 1971), and Az ajtó ( The Door, 1987). Under Communist rule, this early critical success became a liability, and Szabó turned to writing fiction: Her first novel, Freskó (Fresco), came out in 1958, followed closely by Az őz ( The Fawn). In 1947, she published two volumes of poetry, Bárány (The Lamb), and Vissza az emberig (Return to Man), for which she received the Baumgartner Prize in 1949.
