What really intrigues me is collecting non-book items which have Alice as their obvious inspiration. Generally, though, if I see an old copy at a used bookstore which is cheap, I don't mind dropping a few bucks for a tattered copy of Looking Glass or such. While I do have a few different editions of some of his writings, none is particularly valuable. er, I mean, 'editions', I'm not one who is obsessively tracking down first printings and such of Carroll's works. By no means would I think I have the largest collection of such items, nor even the 'best' (by whatever metric one could use), but the collection is just a fascination which keeps my eyes wide for new additions.Īnd concerning 'additions'. I started collecting things related to Wonderland back in 1996, and since then have accumulated a few things (most of which are kept in the guest bedroom of my house - known as the 'Alice Room' appropriately enough). "Alice" as in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and other things Lewis Carroll-ian. Eric Harshbarger's ALICE pages Wondrous LandĪmong my other interests documented on my website, I decided to dedicate a section to my fascination with all this Alice-related.

Isaiah broke my heart, and I am glad the third installment, Crash Into You will be his story. Her dedication to saving her mother is both sad and admirable. Like Noah, Beth is tough and does not want to let people get close to her. We read Noah’s story in Pushing the Limits, and now, we get to read Beth’s story in Dare You To. All three have serious family issues that caused them to live outside the view of their legal guardians and Children’s Services. WHAT I LIKED: So much to love! Dare You To is a character-driven story about Noah, Isaiah, and Beth, three friends who live in Beth’s aunt’s basement. ROMANTIC HEAT: Like August in Texas! Turn up the AC! As long as Beth goes quietly to live with him and tries to start her life over, he promises not to tell the police what he knows about Beth’s mother. After Beth takes the fall for her mother’s actions, Beth’s uncle shows up with a custody order. Beth lives in the filthy underbelly of urban Louisville and tries desperately to protect her junkie mother from her abusive boyfriend. Ryan is the cute, popular high school athlete who lives in a beautiful house in the Kentucky countryside with his successful, perfect family. SUMMARY: Ryan and Beth are complete opposites. Finding herself in more danger than she ever bargained for, she's more determined than ever to save the child-and man-she's come to love. Hedlunds debut novel is no light-hearted romp through history. As the preacher's enemies become desperate to silence him, they draw Elizabeth into a deadly web of deception. Jody Hedlund, Bethany House, 14.99 trade paper (384p) ISBN 9780764208324. Yet Elizabeth's new role as nanny takes a dangerous turn when John's boldness from the pulpit makes him a target of political and religious leaders. She's even willing to risk her lone marriage prospect to help the little family. Always ready to help those in need, Elizabeth ignores John's protests of her aid. In 1650s England, a young Puritan maiden is on a mission to save the baby of her newly widowed preacher-whether her assistance is wanted or not. No matter the danger, John Costin was determined to speak God's word,Īs enemies threaten to silence Costin-and those close to him-will following their hearts cost John and Elizabeth everything? No matter the sacrifice, Elizabeth Whitbread would serve a wounded family. Do not engage in hate speech, harassment, arguing in bad faith, sealioning, or general pot stirring. There, Mandela begins to get involved in the ANC. In Part Three: Birth of a Freedom Fighter, Mandela begins spending time at the home of Walter Sisulu, a prominent member of the ANC. There, he learns more about urban life in South Africa, works in a law firm, and gains exposure to the ANC and Communist Party in South Africa. In Part Two: Johannesburg, Mandela describes his time as a young man in Johannesburg, where he pursues law studies. He describes his attempts to gain an education, mostly at missionary schools. The son of a local chief, Mandela recalls passing time playing childhood games and listening to his parents’ stories. In Part One: A Country Childhood, Mandela describes his birth in 1918 and his childhood in the Transkei of South Africa. In his memoir, Long Walk to Freedom, South African freedom fighter and author Nelson Mandela describes his trajectory from a Xhosa boy in a small village in the Transkei, to a revolutionary anti-apartheid resistance fighter, to a political prisoner held for 27 years in prison, and finally to South Africa’s first black President. The following version of this book was used to create the guide: Mandela, Nelson Rolihlahla. Scholars and writers like Patricia Hill Collins, Joan Morgan, and the late bell hooks have long understood that oppression and injustice is perpetrated and enacted through customs and cultural practices as well as law. Black feminists are also some of the most astute observers and theorists of American mass culture right now. It's also true that some of the most important leaders on the frontlines of these battles are Black women, people like law professor Kimberle Crenshaw who helped develop the concept of intersectionality and the much debated and maligned and misunderstood critical race theory and a new wave of thinkers picking up that inheritance. We're in a time of backlash to ideas that challenge white America's perception of itself, and we're also living through a great reevaluation of what American society can and should look like. He is a siren-hunting pirate, and his crew has just caught a siren. The Midasan Prince Elian sails on the pirate ship Saad with his loyal crew. The Sea Queen then tells Lira that she must hunt for the heart of a regular sailor for her birthday, taking away her glory as “The Prince’s Bane,” the siren known for killing only princes. Lira offers to take Khalia’s punishment to protect her from the Sea Queen’s wrath, and the Sea Queen beats her and crushes the heart she stole. When they return from their hunt, the Sea Queen isn’t happy and decides to punish them both-Lira for hunting too soon, and Khalia for not stopping her. She only steals hearts from princes, and since the ship is the only vessel on which the Adekarosin prince sails, she decides to take his heart while her cousin takes the queen’s. Though Lira is still two weeks away from her birthday and therefore not supposed to steal a heart, she notices that there’s a prince aboard the ship. They stalk a human ship, and when they are close enough, they begin to sing their hypnotic siren song, which will lure their human victims into the sea and to their deaths. Lira, a young siren, is tasked with taking her younger cousin Khalia out to hunt for a heart for her birthday. |
